If I'm talking to you, I'm not going to use "they" "them" or "theirs" or any of their derivatives to address you. Hell, the money they're spending printing these buttons could probably add at least one substantive piece of reading material to the library.Ģ) Ineffective: the most vulnerable people will not wear these buttons. Here's why it's bs:ġ) Trade-offs: people spent time, money, and energy on a project like this rather than on other things. It's funny the reaction from people who think there are no issues with this ("THEY'RE JUST TRYING TO BE INCLUSIVE"). And I think that this subject in particular draws a lot of ire because it has very extreme proponents sometimes, but it's not. I'm not at all given to slippery slope arguments, because I've seen time and time again that they have no basis in reality. I'm not saying we should always ask for people's pronouns before a conversation, but if they ask us to use different pronouns, why not? What does it matter to you? We do things for tiny percentages of the population all the time. Also, as someone who struggles to pay my bills every month, it makes me very, very resentful to be talked down to. It's something we all pay every semester and then gets distributed to various outcomes. This gesture also isn't something that they take out of your account when they decide to do it.
